Selena Gomez was trending on X (formerly Twitter) soon after the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards on Tuesday for her candid reactions to singers Olivia Rodrigo, SZA and Chris Brown bagging nominations at the annual music gala.
Held in New Jersey's Prudential Center, the award ceremony saw the singer-actress entering the night with three nominations and winning an award for Best Afrobeats for her 2022 song Calm Down featuring Nigerian rapper Rema.
The 31-year-old singer was seen brimming with joy and throwing her hands in the air when R&B singer SZA won the Best R&B Video Award. However, SZA did not make an appearance at the awards ceremony and that left Selena disappointed.
Grammy-winning singer Olivia Rodrigo faced a stage disaster as a red curtain fell from the rafters while she was performing a reimagined version of her 2023 song Vampire. During this moment, Selena was caught on camera covering her face with her hands in shock. Her reaction went viral soon after the VMA night.
The Only Murders in the Building star was next seen passing a sour expression at Chris Brown’s nomination at the VMAs.
After the reactions went viral on X, Selena took to her Instagram handle on Wednesday and wrote, “I will never be a meme again. I'd rather sit still than be dragged for being myself. Much love.”
