A new Scott Pilgrim Takes off poster featuring all the characters and a promo video of voice actors talking about the project were dropped by Netflix ahead of the anime’s November 17 premiere on the streaming platform.
Based on Bryan Lee O’Malley’s popular comic books, the anime revolves around young bass guitarist Scott Pilgrim who has to win his dream girl Ramona’s heart by taking on her previous seven romantic partners as well as the world.
“SCOTT PILGRIM TAKES OFF is out tomorrow! 🛼Don’t let it skate past you!🛼#ScottPilgrimTakesOff,” Oni Press, the publisher of the original Scott Pilgrim comic books, wrote alongside the poster on X on Thursday.
In 2010, Edgar Wright came out with Scott Pilgrim vs. The World — a film adaptation of the popular comics. It was also adapted into a video game named Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game.
The original cast of the 2010 live-action film have returned to lend their voices to the characters in the anime adaptation. Michael Cera, who played Scott in Wright’s film, has rendered his voice to the protagonist in the anime, while Mary Elizabeth Winstead has reprised her role as the voice actor for Ramona Flowers.
At a premiere event on November 17, the cast and crew of the anime series spoke at length about their thoughts on the new adaptation and how it would appeal to fans of the 2010 cult-classic film.
“I think it’s really beautiful and funny and incredibly unexpected for people to see,” said Winstead at the premiere. “I think through doing it in animation, the sky was the limit,” she added, talking about the myriad possibilities that came with the anime adaptation of the comics.
“And I think we went to the most creative, exciting place that you could really imagine,” the Tru Calling actress further explained.
Ellen Wong, who has reprised her role as a voice actor for Scott's ex-girlfriend Knives Chau, expressed how she connects with the story and how she is sure that other fans feel the same way. “The fans of Scott Pilgrim are incredible. They are so loyal. They love it. They know the stories and it is really something that they connect with and I do too,” she said in a statement.
“Everything's bigger in animation. And so being able to lean in and maximise the character is really fun,” said Satya Bhabha, who played Matthew Patel, Ramona Flowers' first ex-boyfriend and a member of the League of Evil Exes.
Written by O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, the eight-episode anime show is directed by Abel Gongora and created by the Japanese animation studio Science SARU, which is famous for developing anime series and movies such as Devilman Crybaby (2018), Ride your wave (2019), Inu-Oh (2021) and Star Wars: Visions (2021).
