Rufus Sewell’s Prince Andrew and Gillian Anderson’s interviewer Emily Maitlis lock eyes in the first teaser of Netflix’s upcoming British biographical drama film Scoop, inspired by events that led to Duke of York renouncing his public duties as a royal.

The movie is based on the book Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interview (2022) by former Newsnight producer Sam McAlister, played by Billie Piper in the film.

Dropped by the streamer on Monday, the one-minute-nine-second-long teaser begins with Piper’s McAlister entering Buckingham Palace with her crew as she asserts in a steely voice, “This is the story...the only story...I want it for us.” Having given directions for setting up the scene, McAlister goes up to Anderson’s Maitlis, who is preparing herself for the life-changing interview in one of the palace’s bathrooms. The teaser does not provide a glimpse of the actual interview. Instead, it ends with Maitlis addressing the duke. Meanwhile, Sewell’s Prince Andrew appears visibly distressed, indicating that the showdown has begun.

The movie is billed as a behind-the-scenes account of Prince Andrew's 2019 Newsnight interview which primarily revolved around the duke’s relationship with sex trafficking convict Jeffrey Epstein, a powerful financier. During the interview, Maitlis questioned Andrew about one Virginia Giuffre, who had accused Epstein of trafficking her to the duke when she was 17 years old.

The interview sparked public unrest, which led to Queen Elizabeth II revoking Prince Andrew’s military affiliations and Royal patronages in 2022.

The interview aired shortly after Epstein committed suicide in his prison cell on August 10, 2019.

Directed by Philip Martin, known for Netflix’s historical drama series The Crown, the film also features Romola Garai, Esme Wren and Keeley Hawes in key roles.

Adapted for the screen by Peter Moffat, Scoop will premiere on Netflix on April 5.
