It would seem almost impossible for a late-night comedy show that employs 17 cast members (along with many other artists, technicians and staff members) to produce new episodes in this era of sheltering in place. But this weekend, “Saturday Night Live” is going to give it a shot.

On Thursday, NBC said that “SNL,” as its long-running sketch variety series is known, will broadcast an episode Saturday that will include new content created outside of its traditional home at Studio 8H in Rockefeller Center.

NBC said in a statement that this original material would be “produced remotely as ‘SNL’ practices social distancing.” Although no guest host or musical performers were mentioned, the statement added that this new episode would include the recurring “Weekend Update” segment along with “other original content from ‘SNL’ cast members.”

It was unclear from the statement whether any of the material would be broadcast live.

The show’s official Twitter account also posted a photo of what appeared to be all of the cast members participating in a video chat from their various home quarantines.

“SNL”, which is in its 45th season, broadcast its most recent new episode on March 7, which was hosted by Daniel Craig and featured the Weeknd as its musical guest. An episode planned for March 28, which would have been hosted by John Krasinski and featured Dua Lipa as its musical performer, was canceled when the show announced that it was suspending its season amid concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.

In recent weeks, many of television’s late-night talk shows — generally hosted by one or two people — have returned in stripped-down, homemade formats.
