Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan have got together to play cops on the heels of a serial killer in what looks like a murder mystery that’s high on comedy too.
Searchlight Pictures dropped the first trailer of See How They Run where Academy Award winner Rockwell and multiple Academy Award nominee Ronan play police detectives.
The production house tweeted, “There’s a murder to be solved and we’ve got our best detectives on the case. Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan star in @SeeHowTheyRun_ , only in theaters this September.”
See How They Run is directed by Tom George, who most recently helmed all the 19 episodes of the British sitcom This Country - The Aftermath. The original script is written by Mark Chappell.
The film features a stellar cast. Apart from Rockwell and Ronan, there’s Academy Award winner Adrien Brody, Selma star David Oyelowo and Ruth Wilson of Luther fame in prominent roles.
The first trailer introduces Rockwell’s seasoned Inspector Stoppard and Ronan’s rookie Constable Stalker working together on a case. The pair team up to solve a mysterious murder in London’s West End theatre district during the 1950s, investigating the seedy underbelly of England’s glamorous artists and a long list of brazen, imaginative suspects coming forward. The duo soon find themselves chasing a serial killer who is targeting all the initial suspects.
Ronan’s bumbling junior cop is the perfect foil to Rockwell’s studied and composed persona, and the duo share an awkward but endearing chemistry.
The almost two-minute-long trailer gives us a peek into a murder mystery that is reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s mysteries and Rian Johnson’s critically-acclaimed 2019 drama-comedy film Knives Out. The trailer also hints at a major Wes Anderson vibe in the film.
The handcrafted sets, symmetrical framing, quirky characters and heavy use of pastel colours call back Anderson’s films like The Grand Budapest Hotel and The French Dispatch. Incidentally, both Ronan and Brody played pivotal roles in those films.
