Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes has teamed up with Sony Pictures Entertainment for four separate biopics of each member of the Beatles, the production company announced in an X post on Wednesday morning.

“‘Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!’ Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sam Mendes, and Neal Street Productions announced a groundbreaking creative endeavour to tell the story of #TheBeatles with four distinct theatrical feature films,” Sony Pictures wrote on X, quoting a Beatles song, alongside a screenshot of a Deadline report.

The project marks the first time Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney and the families of the late John Lenon and George Harrison, along with right holder Apple Corps Ltd, have granted full life story and music rights for a scripted film.

Touted as “the astonishing story of the greatest band in history”, the project will explore the perspective of each member of the iconic British boy band.

Mendes, known for helming James Bond films Skyfall (2012) and Spectre (2015), will also be producing the films alongside his Neal Street Productions partner Pippa Harris and executive producer Julie Pastor. “I’m honoured to be telling the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies,” the filmmaker said in a statement.

Starr, the only other surviving member of the Beatles besides McCartney, also shared the news on X. “Have you heard the news? Oh boy. We all support the Sam Mendes movie project. Yes, indeed. peace and love,” the 83-year-old musician wrote on the microblogging site on Wednesday.

The four biopics will arrive in theatres in 2027.
