One of the longest labour strikes in Hollywood history is coming to an end with SAG-AFTRA, the union representing American actors, reaching a tentative agreement with studios and streamers on November 9.

The resolution of the conflict between the actors’ body and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) is expected to swing the USD 134-billion American movie and television industry back into motion.

On Thursday, SAG-AFTRA, short for Screen Actors Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, took to their official X handle to share the news with their members. “Thank you all for your dedication, your commitment and your solidarity throughout this strike. It is because of YOU that these improvements became possible.

In solidarity and gratitude,Your TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee,” they wrote on the microblogging site.

Film and television production in many Hollywood studios remained at a standstill since members of the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA went on a strike for better compensation and limited use of artificial intelligence on May 2.

“We are thrilled and proud to tell you that today your TV/Theatrical Negotiating Committee voted unanimously to approve a tentative agreement with the AMPTP. As of 12:01am on November 9, our strike is officially suspended and all picket locations are closed,” the American actors’ body also wrote on their official website.

“We will be in touch in the coming days with information about celebration gatherings around the country,” it added.

“In a contract valued at over one billion dollars, we have achieved a deal of extraordinary scope that includes "above-pattern" minimum compensation increases, unprecedented provisions for consent and compensation that will protect members from the threat of AI, and for the first time establishes a streaming participation bonus,” the union further stated, assuring members of their achievements.

SAG-AFTRA also declared that their pension & health caps have been “substantially raised”, which will help in accomplishing their future plans. They have also mentioned that the deal with AMPTP— a body that represents Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Warner Bros. Discovery, NBC Universal, Paramount and Sony— also includes improvements in substantial hikes for background performers and safeguarding diverse communities.

“We have arrived at a contract that will enable SAG-AFTRA members from every category to build sustainable careers. Many thousands of performers now and into the future will benefit from this work,” they mentioned.

SAG-AFTRA also thanked other unions that extended theory support to the striking actors’ community. “We also thank our union siblings — the workers that power this industry — for the sacrifices they have made while supporting our strike and that of the Writers Guild of America. We stand together in solidarity and will be there for you when you need us.”
