Sabyasachi Mukherjee made history as the first Indian fashion designer to walk the Met Gala red carpet in New York. The Kolkata-based couturier sported an embroidered cotton duster coat from the Sabyasachi Resort 2024 at Met Gala 2024 on Monday night.
“As the galloping horde of mechanisation, modernisation and uniformity march ever closer, it is craft, that embodiment of human touch, tradition and diversity that will safeguard culture from the passage of time,” Sabyasachi wrote on Instagram, sharing pictures of the couturier posing on streets of New York.
The coat, layered with tourmalines, pearls, emeralds and diamonds from Sabyasachi High Jewellery, featured floral motifs that subtly resonated with the gala's The Garden of Time theme.
Sabyasachi’s achievement drew appreciation from fans and fellow celebrities. Bipasha Basu and Zoya Akhtar showered love on Sabyasachi.
“One of the best fashion designers of the world from India in the Met Gala event.... This is the absolute moment,” wrote one fan, while another commented, “And I feel so proud to see a man sticking to his beliefs of core Indian fashion intricacies and making it a huge luxury brand for the world. Elite intense lux powerhouse of India.”
Sabyasachi had also designed the mint green floral sari that Alia Bhatt wore to the event.
