Barbie actor Ryan Gosling, in collaboration with the film’s music composers, has released an extended play album with three new versions of the song I’m Just Ken — a holiday, an acoustic and a disco remix — ahead of the Christmas season.

The live recording of the first track was dropped on YouTube by Atlantic Records on Wednesday. The first song is a holiday version of I’m Just Ken with a Christmassy vibe that is enhanced by the sound of violins, louder drums and more background vocals. Before he starts to sing, Gosling wears his sunglasses and tells the audience, “Because the world can have Ken’s voice but only Barbie can have his eyes,” leaving fans mesmerised.

In the video, Gosling is seen practising the lines of the song before he performs live with the composers and an orchestra. Before he begins, the Notebook star asks Ronson whether he should deliver the chorus with a bit of aggression to which the latter replies that the Christmassy feeling will sound fresher than the “delicate vulnerability” of the original song.

An acoustic version was dropped at the same time. It gives a new form to Gosling’s Kenergy — the confidence, energy, and self-belief that he learns to embody in the film. The song’s serenity makes the concept of Kenergy more lucid with its smoothly flowing lyrics and soft music.

Following the release of Gerwig’s Barbie, I’m Just Ken made it to the top 5 on Billboard’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, garnering more than 100 million streams globally. The film’s soundtrack album was nominated for 11 Grammy Awards and Gosling’s song has been nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

Barbie has received a total of 10 nods at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, becoming the second most-nominated film in the history of the Oscars after the 1972 musical Cabaret.

Ken the EP, composed by Barbie composers Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, is now available globally on music streaming platforms.
