Filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s Cirkus, headlined by Ranveer Singh, has opened to numbers below expectations at the box office, earning a meagre Rs 10.5 crore nett on Day 1, as per Box Office India figures.

The comedy drama — also starring Jacqueline Fernandez, Varun Sharma, Pooja Hegde and Johnny Lever — raised only Rs 3.2 crore nett from leading multiplex chains like PVR, INOX and Cinepolis, according to Box Office India.

Before the film’s release, media consulting firm Ormax had predicted Cirkus would open at about Rs 9.8 crore nett on the first day.

As per trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the audience decided not to go for the film after watching the trailer. “But it is too early to see as it is a long weekend,” he added.

Exhibitor Raj Bansal said, “As of now, Cirkus looks like Rohit Shetty's weakest film of his career and the weekend business could be around Rs 28 crore.”

Trade analyst Atul Mohan opines that the fate of the film was sealed when the trailer was out. He, however, added, “The public sensed it as a bad film from the trailer itself and didn't want to enter the cinema hall, unlike the earlier days when people did go to cinemas for the makers and the actors of the film.”

Cirkus will be Ranveer's third flop in a row after 83, which suffered because of the second wave of Covid, and Jayeshbhai Jordaar that bombed big time at the box office.
