The show is based on the American Fear Factor show where contestants are made to face their fears while performing stunts. Before being renamed Khatron Ke Khiladi, the show was called Fear Factor India.

Initially, actor Akshay Kumar hosted the show for two seasons. He had returned to host the fourth season of the show as well. Actors Priyanka Chopra (Season 3) and Arjun Kapoor (Season 7) have also hosted the show in separate seasons. Shetty, however, has hosted the show for the most number of seasons (Season 5-6 and Season 10-12). He even hosted the spinoff show Khatron Ke Khiladi – Made in India.

In his Instagram post, Shetty shared a video with the caption, “Time to go crazy, wild, raw and real once again! KHATRON KE KHILADI!! Shoot begins! #capetown #southafrica @colorstv,” confirming that this season is being shot in Cape Town, South Africa.

This year 15 celebrity contestants are a part of the reality show. Rubina Dilaik, Shivangi Joshi, Munawar Faruqui, Kanika Mann, Sriti Jha, Tushar Kalia, Aneri Vajani, Mohit Malik, Chetna Pande, Jannat Zubair Rahmani, Nishant Bhat, Pratik Sehajpal, Rajiv Adatia, Erika Packard and Faisal ‘Faisu’ Sheikh have been finalised as contestants of the reality show. According to sources, Rahmani, known for her role as Phulwa in the television show of the same name, is the highest-paid contestant on the show.

Along with Shetty, the contestants also took to social media to share news of the shoot. Sehajpal, Sheikh and Dilaik among others shared pictures and videos with Shetty as they landed for the shoot in South Africa. It is speculated that Faruqui might have backed out of the show as he is yet to arrive in the county and join his fellow contestants.

The show is likely to premiere next month on Colors channel, but the exact date has not been announced.
