Alia Bhatt’s Rani Chatterjee and Ranveer Singh’s Rocky Randhawa — two poles-apart individuals with different cultural roots — decide to swap families in an attempt to solidify their chances of an inter-caste marriage in the trailer of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, dropped by Dharma Productions on Tuesday.
The three-minute-21-second trailer begins with glimpses of the brewing romance between the two opposites — the Bengali journalist Rani and the Punjabi carefree hunk Rocky.
Rocky and Rani decide to get married but not without the permission of their drastically different families. Rani belongs to the Chatterjee clan comprising her father (Tota Roy Chowdhury), mother (Churni Ganguly) and grandmother (Shabana Azmi). Rocky, on the other hand, is from a traditional Punjabi family of the Randhawa's comprising his parents and grandparents — played by a soft-spoken Dharmendra and an opinionated and strong Jaya Bachchan.
The couple decide to switch places for three months in order to live with each other’s parents. The switcheroo results in a bunch of funny moments including one where Rocky mistakes Rabindranath Tagore as Alia’s grandfather and claims that he has stopped voting since Shamita (Shetty) isn’t a part of Bigg Boss anymore.
Alia, on the other hand, struggles to keep up with the traditions of the Randhawa household while Jaya’s Dhanalakshmi plots against the love birds. Alia’s quintessential modern Bengali woman look is a winner. However, it doesn’t make up for Ranveer’s jokes that fall flat more often than not and the missing chemistry between the two leads.
The trailer also gives a look into the massive and spectacular sets which are reminiscent of Abhishek Verman’s Kalank (2019) along with the few other songs coming our way. While it isn’t clear whether the wedding actually happens between the two, what is clear is that they eventually makeup after breaking up in the film — perhaps right after the song Tum Kya Mile where Rani imagines romancing with Rocky amidst the snow-capped mountains of Kashmir.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahanii marks the return of Karan as a director after seven years. Jaya Bachchan and Dharmendra will also be seen making their comeback on the silver screen after six and seven years, respectively. The romantic drama is slated for a July 28 release this year.
