Robert De Niro’s former US president George Mullen investigates a devastating cyber attack in the teaser of his debut OTT project Zero Day, dropped by Netflix on Monday.

In technological jargon, zero day is a term used to refer to the security vulnerabilities after hackers have already infiltrated the systems, giving the tech experts “zero days” to fix the flaws.

The one-minute-13-second-long teaser of the limited series shows the veteran actor getting hired by the current US president, played by Angela Bassett, to investigate the crime.

The teaser begins with De Niro interrogating someone and breaking it to him that 3,402 people died on Zero Day. Plane crashes and train derailments brought about absolute chaos, making the citizens spiral into a series of unforeseen circumstances. Amidst the madness, the hackers behind the attack threaten the US government that they will repeat their actions.

In one of the scenes, Bassett’s US president informs De Niro’s character that the Congress is authorising a special investigatory commission which will let the police search houses without warrants. “So they’re just gonna grab people off the streets without warrants,” De Niro replies, to which Bassett says, “Actually, you are.”

Towards the end of the video, Bassett says, “People believe what they need to believe. The truth is the truth, but it’s not always the most important thing,” which hints at a larger conspiracy at play.

Besides De Niro and Bassett, Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Connie Britton and Joan Allen also feature in the cast. Bill Camp, Dan Stevens, Gaby Hoffmann, Clark Gregg and McKinley Belcher III will be seen in guest roles.

Slated to hit Netflix on February 20, Zero Day is created by Eric Newman and Noah Oppenheim. Lesli Linka Glatter has directed all the six episodes of the series and also serves as an executive producer alongside De Niro, Newman and Oppenheim.
