Robbie Coltrane, best known for his role as Hagrid, the friendly half-giant from the Harry Potter series, passed away on Friday at the age of 72, prompting a flurry of tributes from the actors who worked in the popular J.K. Rowling series.

Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger in the eight-part movie series, took to Instagram to pay her tribute. “Robbie, if I ever get to be so kind as you were to me on a film set, I promise I’ll do it in your name and memory,” the actress wrote in her story. She concluded her tribute with a heartfelt line highlighting the connection between her Hermione and Coltrane’s Hagrid, “There was no better Hagrid. You made it a joy to be Hermione.”

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Daniel Radcliffe, who played the role of Harry Potter, said, “Robbie was one of the funniest people I've met and he used to keep us laughing constantly as kids on the set. I've especially fond memories of him keeping our spirits up on Prisoner of Azkaban, when we were all hiding from the torrential rain for hours in Hagrid's hut and he was telling stories and cracking jokes to keep our morale up. I feel incredibly lucky that I got to meet and work with him and very sad that he's passed. He was an incredible actor and a lovely man.”

Radcliffe started working alongside Coltrane at the age of 11 when he played the role of Harry Potter for the first time in the film series.

Bonnie Wright, who played Ron Weasley’s little sister, Ginny Weasley, also took to Instagram to remember Coltrane. “Robbie portrayed Hagrid’s warmth, sense of home and unconditional love for his students and magical creatures so brilliantly. Robbie always treated me and my fellow cast mates when we were wee kids like equal professionals on a film set,” the 31-year-old actress wrote.

Remembering the night shoot from the first of the eight-part series, actor Tom Felton, who played the role of Draco Malfoy, wrote about how Robbie Coltrane looked after all the children on set. “He was a big friendly giant on screen but even more so in real life,” he wrote.

Twins James and Oliver Phelps, who played the roles of the fun twins Fred and George Weasley, shared their personal stories about Coltrane.

“Will miss the random chats about all subjects under the sun. And I’ll never forget in September 2000, Robbie Coltrane came over to a very nervous 14 year old me on my 1st ever day on a movie set and said, ‘enjoy it, you’ll be great’. Thank you for that X,” James wrote on Instagram.

Oliver Phelps shared a tweet remembering a day from November 2001 when Coltrane made the kids comfortable for their first red carpet appearance.

Matthew Lewis, who played the beloved Neville Longbottom, shared a tweet as well remembering how Coltrane used to call him ‘Space Boy’.
