Actress Reese Witherspoon announced an open casting on Thursday for the role of protagonist Elle Woods in a prequel series to her hit 2001 film Legally Blonde, inviting auditions from actors interested in playing the high school version of Woods.

“Our search for the high school version of Elle Woods is officially ON! In the video, the Oscar-winning actress confirms that the project will be a collaboration between her production banner Hello Sunshine and Prime Video. Currently titled Elle, the upcoming show will explore the character’s high school years.

Reports of a prequel series to Legally Blonde first surfaced in May. Laura Kittrell serves as the series creator and showrunner for Elle, which will be executive produced by Witherspoon, Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky and Marc Platt. Amazon MGM Studios will produce the new show.

Witherspoon starred as Elle Woods in two Legally Blonde films. The first, based on the book of the same name by Amanda Brown, was released in 2001. The romantic comedy became a smash hit, earning USD 140 million at the global box office. Witherspoon received a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Elle Woods, a sorority girl who sets out to win back her ex-boyfriend, Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis), by pursuing a Juris Doctor degree at Harvard Law School.

The 2003 sequel Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde was also headlined by Witherspoon. A spin-off, Legally Blondes, was released in 2009, with Witherspoon producing the straight-to-video film rather than starring in it. A musical adaptation, Legally Blonde: The Musical, debuted on Broadway in 2007.
