Season 2 of the superhit Prime Video series Reacher, based on Lee Child’s bestselling books, is now streaming. t2 caught up for a brief video chat with cast members Serinda Swan (who plays Karla Dixon), Shaun Sipos (David O’ Donnell) and Maria Sten (Frances Neagley) on the show.

I spoke to Lee Child, the writer of the Reacher series, a few days ago and he told me that everyone working on Reacher is a fan of the character and his adventures. Would that be applicable to the three of you? What made you want to be a part of Reacher?

Serinda Swan: Well, I think you are stepping into an already-established franchise. I think that when you have that much source material to dive into when you are building a character, it is so helpful. This is sort of a fun family atmosphere that we are all in together, making this wild, crazy show and I think that really helps in the efforts that we are all trying to make. But generally, you know, diving into a world that is already established for you is so helpful.

And the characters! Karla (Dixon, played by Serinda) and Neagley (Frances Neagley, played by Maria Sten) have a long history but this is my first season on the show. So being able to have such a beautiful connection with Maria as well and everybody is so lovely. And Shaun (Sipos, who plays David O’ Donnell). We are the newbies on the show for this season. I love Shaun too. Canadians... we give each other a hard time! (Laughs)

It is amazing when you are fans of what you are doing and are working together for the same goal. And you don’t often get to work with people that you really love. That’s been tons of fun. And Karla’s a badass. I love that he (Lee Child) wrote these hyper-intelligent females that have an incredible skill set, other than just what they look like. I love Lee Child for that. I think that’s such a lovely, brilliant thing to do for us to step into these shoes.
Shaun Sipos: I really enjoy the show because of its simplicity. We live in such a confusing world where so many people see things that are wrong and they go: ‘I can’t step in and do anything.’ And when you turn this show on, you see Reacher notice something, or any of us, and we go: ‘No, we are going to correct that right now. That’s wrong!’ So I think it helps you relax, at least me anyway, when I watch it, because you go: ‘Oh yeah, of course, that makes sense.’ There are no grey zones where you say: ‘I don’t know what to do there. Was that okay?’ You are like: ‘That’s a bad guy. And they are getting what is coming.’

For each of you, what’s been your biggest learning working on this series?

Maria Sten: The stunts. Learning fight choreography and the specificity of it to match each of our characters.
Serinda: Learning to love shooting in the winter... again! I literally left Toronto and I was like: ‘I am done. It’s cold. Don’t want to do this.’ And then Nick (Santora), our showrunner, said: ‘The book is set in Los Angeles but we are going to shoot it in Toronto!’ And I was like: ‘Learning curve!’ (Laughs) We were cold this season... we were cold-hearted and cold-bodied!
Shaun: Stunts for me, as well. And the stunt team, by the way, did an amazing job. These guys don’t get enough credit for what they do and they really are, in my opinion, the stars of the show.
