Rashi Kapoor’s Espíritu Libre, which she unveiled at the Lakme Fashion Week in partnership with FDCI, was one joyous celebration of colours, sparkle and shine, in keeping with the season of celebrations. We loved the inherent merriness of the collection that was inspired by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. Sushmita Sen walked for Rashi in a shimmery sari that matched the mood. Rashi, who hails from Calcutta, chatted with t2 at the launch of the collection at her Lake Market store in the city.

Rashi, the collection looks gorgeous. How did you borrow from Frida Kahlo’s aesthetics for Espíritu Libre?

Thank you! Frida Kahlo’s life and art inspired me deeply. Her vibrant spirit, strength, and bold self-expression shaped Espíritu Libre. I wanted the colours, textures, and intricate details to reflect her resilience and grace, with designs that feel both daring and beautiful.

What are the various themes that you have explored?

The collection celebrates themes of resilience, cultural pride, and emotional authenticity. It’s a blend of tradition and modernity, strength and grace — mirroring Frida’s journey and spirit.

We love how happy the collection looks...

I’m so glad you feel that! It’s meant to evoke joy and empowerment. The colours, textures, and flowing silhouettes are crafted to make the wearer feel both radiant and liberated.

Can you tell us what being free-spirited means to you?

For me, being free-spirited is about self-acceptance, courage, and expressing oneself without fear. It’s about embracing all facets of life with openness and celebrating who you are.

Espíritu Libre is also a different territory for you. What notes did you make about yourself when you saw it unfold?

This collection taught me to take risks and trust my instincts. It felt like a personal journey, blending emotional expression with artistic freedom. It reminded me of the importance of authenticity in my work.

There could be no better muse than Sushmita Sen...

Sushmita embodies strength, confidence, and grace. She’s fearless in expressing who she is and inspires so many to live authentically — qualities that resonate with Espíritu Libre.

What are your party favourites from the collection?

The structured velvet jackets with crystal detailing and the flowing dupion ensembles are my top picks. They’re elegant, vibrant, and perfect for making a statement at any celebration.

Name three free-spirited women you admire and why...

Princess Diana, Oprah, Indra Nooyi, and Vera Wang are the free-spirited women I admire for their courage, resilience, and authenticity. They each broke barriers in their fields, stayed true to themselves, and inspired countless others with their vision and strength.
