Ranbir Kapoor-starrer period action drama Shamshera’s trailer was released on Friday, a week after his fantasy-adventure drama Brahmastra’s trailer launch.

Ranbir will be back on the big screen after four years with Yash Raj Films’ (YRF) Shamshera, all set to hit theatres on July 22 in 2D and IMAX, in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.

The two-minute-59-second-high octane trailer has Ranbir Kapoor written all over it. The Karan Malhotra film, touted as a larger-than-life visual spectacle, also stars Sanjay Dutt and Vaani Kapoor. From the film’s poster tagline — Karam se dacait…dharam se azaad — we could make out that Ranbir is all set to play a rebellious and fearless dacoit who steals from the rich. In the Shamshera trailer — A father’s legacy. A son’s destiny — Ranbir presents himself as a protector of his tribe and a son who inherits his father’s legacy.

We expect him to play a double role, both father and son, as the trailer suggests. The highlight of the trailer is when Ranbir gets into a fun mode, dancing to a peppy track with children surrounding him, throwing out cheeky dialogues. From the look and mood, we are reminded of Captain Jack Sparrow (Pirates of the Caribbean). Also, Ranbir is seen doing the typical half-seated, fist-thump on the ground a couple of times, which immediately takes us back to superhero film characters Spiderman and Superman. Since the first poster launch, then the teaser and now the trailer, Ranbir’s rugged and bearded look in Shamshera is in talks.

Set in 1871 in the fictitious city of Kaza, the story revolves around a warrior tribe, the members of which are imprisoned and enslaved by general Durga Shudh Singh (Sanjay Dutt), who plays the film’s antagonist and Ranbir’s arch-rival, employed by the British. RRR deja vu, right? Shamshera, who became a slave-turned-rebel, relentlessly fights for his tribe’s freedom and dignity. As per the trailer, we got a sneak peek of an intense climactic showdown between him and Ranbir. Vaani plays Ranbir’s love interest and a dancer who alerts him of an impending danger which Ranbir ignores playfully.

In a statement released ahead of the launch by YRF, Ranbir said, “I really wish my father (Rishi Kapoor) was alive to see this film. He has always been blatantly honest about his criticism if he has liked something or not liked something, especially with my work. So, it’s sad that he’s not going to see it. But I am excited that I got to do a film like this, and I hope that somewhere up there he is looking out for me, and he is proud of me.”

Ranbir added Shamshera is his attempt to speak to a pan-Indian audience. “I want to grow as an actor and a star and Shamshera is a positive step towards that. You want to make films for a larger audience. You want to tell stories that different generations of an audience can connect to and can get entertained.”

Just a day before the trailer dropped, Sanjay Dutt unveiled his character Daroga Shuddh Singh in Shamshera. This is the first time Ranbir Kapoor will be seen in a film with Dutt, whom he played onscreen in Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju.

The Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui actress Vaani Kapoor also released her look as Sona ahead of the trailer launch. This is the first time she is paired opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

Produced by Aditya Chopra, Shamshera is directed by Karan Malhotra, who has made his directorial debut with Hrithik Roshan in Agneepath and later worked with Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra in Brothers.
