Ranbir Kapoor has singled out Mickey from Luv Ranjan's upcoming romcom Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar (TJMM) as his only onscreen character that he would like to replicate in real life.
Speaking at a promotional event for the Luv Ranjan directorial in Mumbai, Ranbir said, “When Luv narrated the idea of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, I instinctively knew that this was something new. I haven’t done anything like that in this space. I have never played a character like Mickey before. This is the only character that I have played onscreen that I would like to be like. There are certain value systems that Mickey stands for where family is concerned and life is concerned. I liked him when I heard about him.”
TJMM, which marks Ranbir’s return to romcoms after 2013’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, has him and Shraddha Kapoor paired up on screen for the first time.
Revealing the reason behind him staying away from romcoms, the 40-year-old said, “I was typecast in the romcom genre. I was getting a lot of offers. But the genre seemed like a dead end. People were writing the same stories. There was nothing new coming up. So, somewhere in my mind, I had already retired from romcom.”
Ranbir and director Luv Ranjan along with Ajay Devgn were in talks for a gangster action film which never worked out because of dates and other things. It was then that Luv told Ranbir the idea of TJMM.
After a hiatus of four years following Sanju (2018), Ranbir had his first theatrical release Shamshera (2022), which tanked at the box office. But Brahmastra evened the year for the actor as it ran successfully in theatres.
Ranbir has portrayed a variety of emotionally challenging roles in films such as Rockstar, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Tamasha, and Jagga Jaasoos. When asked about how easy or difficult it is for him to emote a variety of emotions, the actor shared a trivia from his debut film Saawariya.
He said, “Crying is easier for me than laughing on screen. When I laugh, it sounds like a donkey laughing in reverse. In my first film Saawariya, Sanjay Leela Bhansali told me I have sad eyes. He said, ‘With the kind of bone structure and everything that you have, even if you just sit there looking, people will think that you are sad.’.”
Interestingly, director Luv Ranjan shared that he has liked Ranbir ever since the Saawariya trailer was released. The Pyaar Ka Punchnama director said, “I wanted to work with Ranbir Kapoor and that had got nothing to do with him being a star. I like him ever since the trailer of Saawariya was released.”
“With the hard work, dedication, and patience that Ranbir worked with me in TJMM, a newcomer wouldn’t have been able to do it. He will give the director the best possible environment for him to do his best work. And he will manage in any kind of environment,” added the director.
Along with Ranbir and Shraddha, TJMM has an extended ensemble cast including Dimple Kapadia, comedian Anubhav Singh Bassi, Boney Kapoor, Hasleen Kaur, and Monica Chaudhary. The film is scheduled to release on March 8.
