An injured Radhika Apte wears a bandage on her nose and fumes with anger in the first-look picture from Karan Kandhari’s upcoming film Sister Midnight, dropped by the makers ahead of the film’s premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Sharing the picture on Instagram on Tuesday, Griffin Pictures wrote, “Here she is. Welcome to the world, Uma. First (look emoji) of Sister Midnight before she heads to Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.”

In the picture, Radhika’s Uma holds her tousled hair up in a knot and gazes into the camera with vengeful eyes. Slightly covered in soot, the actress appears with a bandage on her nose, hinting at the kind of abuse inflicted upon her during her married life in a Mumbai slum.

The film has also been selected for the Quinzaine des Cinéastes 2024, the Directors' Fortnight which is an independent section held before the Cannes Film Festival. Sister Midnight is the only Indian film to make it to the Directors' Fortnight.

“Mumbai-set twisted love story - A fantastical punk comedy, a feminist revenge film, and a revamped vampire movie rolled into one. An original, funny and macabre tale centred on a rebellious, misanthropic character. We follow the trials and tribulations of Uma — a young, newly married woman — who discovers the realities of married life in a Bombay slum, and whose thirst for vengeance will not be abated,” reads the official synopsis of the film as per British Council.

Sister Midnight stars Ashok Pathak alongside Radhika. It is produced by Wellington Films, Radhika, Suitable Pictures, Alan McAlex, Film4 and British Film Institute.

Kandhari made his feature film debut 20 years back with Bye Bye Miss Goodnight starring Rajpal Yadav and Neha Dubey. He is also known for his drama shorts Sidney and Hard Hat.
