Veteran Rabindrasangeet exponent Sumitra Sen died at her home in the early morning on January 3 at the age of 89.
The singer had been suffering from age-related ailments and was admitted to a private hospital with bronchial-pneumonia complications on December 21 last year. She was discharged from the hospital last evening.
Sen is survived by her two daughters — Indrani Sen and Sraboni Sen, both well-known singers themselves. Sraboni Sen took to Facebook to announce the death of her mother. “Maa left us this morning,” she wrote.
The Rabindrasangeet exponent will be remembered for her rendition of songs like Jokhon Porbe Na Mor, Sokhi Vabona Kahare Bole and Mone Ki Dwidha. Her rendition of Aaj Jyotsna Raate Shobai Gechhe Bone in Ritwik Ghatak’s classic movie Komal Gandhar has remained a steadfast interpretation of the song.
West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee expressed grief at the demise of Sen. “One of the foremost artists of Rabindrasangeet, she has been enthralling the audience for decades. I had a close bond with Sumitra Sen for a long time. Her death is an irreparable loss to the music world,” she said.
The West Bengal government had bestowed the Sangeet Mahasamman award on Sen in 2012.
