India Amarteifio’s Queen Charlotte recalls the beginning of her interracial love story with British monarch George III, played by Corey Mylchreest, and the secrets that threatened their union in the trailer of Netflix’s Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, dropped by the streamer on March 23.

A prequel to the first and second seasons of Netflix’s hit regency romance show Bridgerton, the six-episode Netflix series will be based around the marriage of Charlotte and George. The show will also trace Charlotte’s rise to power as the king’s consort.

The two-minute-54-second trailer shows a young Charlotte getting confused as to why she has been chosen to be the wife to the future King of England. When Charlotte is brought into the palace, she senses something is amiss as she doesn’t get to meet her future husband. George’s absence from the dining table becomes a matter of concern to the bride-to-be, who plans to run away from the situation.

Charlotte’s runaway plan, however, is stopped by George himself, which begins a heartwarming interracial love story, touted to be the first of its kind in the books as well as the Netflix series. Charlotte soon settles into her life at Buckingham Palace but discovers that the King has hidden his mental illness from his wife, something that has been revealed earlier in the two seasons of Bridgerton.

While the first two seasons of Bridgerton shed light on a powerful queen who decides upon the marriage of her subjects, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story will focus more on her romance with the king and the factors that could threaten their marriage.

An older Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) has been a prominent character in the previous two seasons of Bridgerton and it is through her that all the marriages are sanctioned in the period drama. Joining her is another important character from the Bridgerton universe — a young Lady Danbury, played by Arsema Thomas. The trailer also sheds light on the budding friendship between Charlotte and Danbury who remain friends in the future as well.

The older version of Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) became the matchmaker for the first couple of Bridgerton — the Duke (Regé-Jean Page) and Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor).

Ruth Gemmell as Lady Violet Bridgerton also makes an appearance along with Hugh Sachs as the older Brimsley. Other members of the cast include Freddie Dennis, Richard Cunningham, Tunji Kasim, Rob Maloney and Cyril Nri.

“Centered on Queen Charlotte’s rise to prominence and power, this Bridgerton-verse prequel tells the story of how the young Queen’s marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton,” according to Netflix’s official logline for the show.

Produced by Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Shonda Rhimes, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story will be streaming on Netflix from May 4 this year. The upcoming third season of Bridgerton, which is also releasing soon, will focus on the burgeoning romance between Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope (Coughlan).
