Dangal (2016) follows the real-life story of Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan), a former wrestler who defies social constraints and prejudices to train his daughters Geeta (Fatima Sana Shaikh) and Babita (Sanya Malhotra) for international wrestling. The film won numerous awards, including four National Film Awards, and was lauded for its portrayal of gender equality and women empowerment.

Chak De! India (2007) follows the story of Kabir Khan (Shah Rukh Khan), a former Indian hockey player who faced brutal criticism for losing a match to Pakistan at a global tournament. Determined to showcase his devotion to the country, he takes on the challenging role of coaching the Indian women’s national hockey team which requires him to unite the players and instil discipline.

Nani plays Arjun, a talented yet failed cricketer, who struggles to make ends meet in his thirties in the 2019 film Jersey. Once a promising cricketer, Arjun had to give up his career due to dire circumstances and now leads a mundane life with his wife Sarah (Shraddha Srinath) and their young son Nani. Arjun’s life, however, takes a turn when his son asks for a cricket jersey as a birthday present, which reignites his passion for the sport.

Farhan Akhtar’s 2013 film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is perfectly aligned with the spirit of the Olympic season as it revolves around the Indian athlete Milkha Singh who overcomes many obstacles to become a world champion and an Olympian.

While 2017’s Sachin: A Billion Dreams is a biographical drama based on the life of former Team India captain Sachin Tendulkar, the 2016 film Sultan features Salman Khan as a middle-aged wrestler who is determined to revive his career following the death of his son.

This year’s Olympics began in Paris on July 26 and will conclude on August 11. The opening ceremony of the mega-sporting event, held on July 26, featured performances by various singers like Celine Dion, Lady Gaga and the heavy metal band Gojira.
