Prime Video has discontinued My Lady Jane, starring Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel, after season one due to low viewership despite its 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, reported US-based entertainment magazine Deadline on Friday.
Both the leads of the show, Emily and Edward, expressed their disappointment over the cancellation of the show on their official social media handles.
“Love you all, thanks for watching,” Emily wrote on her Instagram story on August 17 with a broken heart emoji, sharing a behind-the-scenes picture.
Edward also took to his Instagram handle on August 16 to share a series of behind-the-scenes pictures. “Wish I could go back in time and show the real Jane Grey all my bts,” the actor wrote.
The eight-episode series that premiered on June 27 was based on the best-selling book by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows, which reimagines the tragic life of Lady Jane Grey, who became the queen of England for only nine days before Mary Tudor replaced her on the throne.
Despite receiving widespread critical acclaim for its imaginative and witty take on Tudor history, My Lady Jane struggled to capture a substantial audience. The series fell short of impacting Nielsen's Top 10 weekly streaming charts, highlighting the disparity between its positive reviews and actual viewership.
The cancellation of My Lady Jane is a significant disappointment, especially in light of the promising developments that were hinted at for a potential second season. The first season ended with Jane's dramatic escape from execution, leaving many fans anticipating how her story would continue in the next chapter.
Historically, Lady Grey, the great-granddaughter of King Henry VII, was proclaimed queen following the death of her first cousin King Edward VI. However, support quickly shifted to Edward's half-sister Mary Tudor, leading to Jane's imprisonment in the Tower of London, her conviction for treason and her eventual execution.
