The first season of Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout, based on the eponymous video game franchise, is the streamer’s most-watched season of a series globally ‘since the premiere of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’, Amazon MGM Studios said in a statement on Friday.

Fallout, which made its global debut on April 10, is produced by Westworld co-creator Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, with Jonathan directing the first three episodes. Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner served as executive producers, creators and co-showrunners of the eight-episode series.

“Jonah, Lisa, Geneva, and Graham have captivated the world with this ground-breaking, wild ride of a show. The bar was high for lovers of this iconic video game and so far, we seem to have exceeded their expectations, while bringing in millions of new fans to the franchise. The cast led by Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins and Kyle MacLachlan have knocked it out of the park,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, said in the statement.

Salke also announced that the series has been renewed for a second season only after a week of the first season’s debut. “We are thrilled to announce season two after only one week out and take viewers even farther into the surreal world of Fallout,” she added.

“We can’t wait to blow up the world all over again,” Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy said in a joint statement, heaping praise on the showrunners, Geneva and Graham, the cast members and the creators of the popular video game from Bethesda Game Studios.

Fallout explores the divide between the privileged and the deprived in a post-apocalyptic setting where resources are scarce. After two centuries, those living in opulent underground shelters are compelled to venture into the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind, only to encounter a bizarre, intricate and perilous world beyond their imaginations.

Ella Purnell plays Lucy, an optimistic Vault-dweller, whose peaceful and idealistic nature is put to the test when she is compelled to rise to the surface to rescue her father. Walton Goggins plays the Ghoul, who is “a morally ambiguous bounty hunter holding within him a 200-year history of the post-nuclear world”. Aaron Moten’s Maximus is a young soldier aspiring to become a squire in the Brotherhood of Steel to bring law and order to the wasteland.

Fallout also stars Twin Peaks actor Kyle MacLachlan, Moisés Arias, Sarita Choudhury, Michael Emerson, Leslie Uggams, Frances Turner, Dave Register, Zach Cherry, Johnny Pemberton, Rodrigo Luzzi, Annabel O'Hagan and Xelia Mendes-Jones.

Fallout is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
