Jake Gyllenhaal’s Rusty Sabich, a prosecutor by profession, finds himself in the crosshairs of investigators following the mysterious death of a colleague he had an affair with in the official trailer of Apple TV’s legal drama series Presumed Innocent, dropped by the streamer on Wednesday.

The two-minute-25-second-long video begins with a shot of an undertrial Rusty and Gyllenhaal’s voiceover — “I did not kill her”. The next scene shows a wholesome moment between him and his family during breakfast. However, these light-hearted moments do not last for long as the news of his colleague Carolyn’s murder is broken to him. As he gets questioned by his superiors, Rusty has no other option but to admit that he was romantically involved with Carolyn, which further complicates the matter.

Rusty keeps repeating that he did not kill his colleague. The situation gets worse as people find out that he was in Carolyn’s apartment the night she was murdered. When his wife Barbara finds out about her husband’s affair, she supports him despite going through the “darkest time of her life”.

The scenes towards the end of the trailer show Rusty constantly trying to prove himself innocent by emphasising on the line, “I did not kill her”. As evidence mounts against him, he must navigate a complex legal battle to prove his innocence, uncovering corruption and hidden truths within the legal system along the way.

Presumed Innocent is adapted from Scott Turow’s 1987 novel Innocent. In 1990, Harrison Ford played the role of Rusty Sabich, while Greta Scacchi played Carolyn in the original film of the same name. The original film, directed by Alan J. Pakula, is a gripping legal thriller exploring themes of betrayal, justice and moral ambiguity.

“Starring Gyllenhaal in the lead role of chief deputy prosecutor Rusty Sabich, the series takes viewers on a gripping journey through the horrific murder that upends the Chicago Prosecuting Attorney’s office when one of its own is suspected of the crime. The series explores obsession, sex, politics, and the power and limits of love, as the accused fights to hold his family and marriage together,” reads the official synopsis of the series as per Apple TV.

Directed by David E. Kelley and produced by J.J. Abrams, the eight-episode series Presumed Innocent is slated to premiere on Apple TV on June 12.
