The official teaser of Mani Ratnam’s highly anticipated magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan Part 1 or PS-1 promises a grand production with visuals on a par with the level of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali series.

Actors Suriya, Mahesh Babu, Mohanlal, Rakshit Shetty, and Amitabh Bachchan released the teaser in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi, respectively.

This is Mani Ratnam’s first attempt at creating a large-scale period drama and by the looks of it, PS-1 seems to have the potential to give us a memorable big-screen experience.

At the start of the one-minute-20-second-long teaser, after establishing the world, we see Vikram’s Aditya Karikalan wreaking havoc while yearning for the woman of his dreams. “The wine, the song, the blood and the war, everything is to forget her, to forget me,” Aditya says in a fit of pain and anger.

An all-star cast is seen looking regal and exquisite in each frame, promising a rich visual experience. In the teaser, the key characters are introduced, and a magnificent retelling of the events that made the Chola dynasty a dominant empire in the Southern subcontinent in the 10th century is promised.

Additionally, this movie has several elaborate battles set in various landscapes, which may contain one of the best war sequences ever shot in Indian cinema.

The teaser also shows glimpses of Vikram as Aditya Karikalan, Karthi as Vanthiyathevan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Queen Nandini, Trisha as Kundavai, and Jayam Ravi as Arulmozhi Varman.

It also features Ashwin Kakumanu, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sarath Kumar, Prabhu, Vikram Prabhu, Jayaram, Prakash Raj, Parthiban, Lal, Jayachitra and Riyaz Khan in pivotal roles.

Based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s historical novel on the life of Rajaraja Chola I, the screenplay of Ponniyin Selvan: Part One has been written by Mani Ratnam, Jeyamohan and Kumaravel.

The first of a two-part series, Ponniyin Selvan: Part One is slated to hit the big screens on September 30.
