Aga Naga, the first single from Mani Ratnam’s historical drama Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2 (PS-II), is an ode to the love between Trisha Krishnan’s Kundavai and Karthi’s Vanthiyathevan.
Composed by A.R. Rahman, the Tamil-language song that dropped on Monday has been sung by Shakthisree Gopalan and penned by Ilango Krishnan.
Ever since Ponniyin Selvan: Part I (PS-I) released in September last year, fans have been eagerly waiting for the song Aga Naga — a part of the background score of the film. Nikhil Ram’s flute, Vignesh on the violin and Haritha Raj strumming the veena add to the charm of this love ballad.
Aga Naga has also been released in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi. Veteran lyricist Gulzar has penned the Hindi version of the song, titled Ruaa Ruaa, which has been sung by Shilpa Rao. Rakshita Suresh lent her voice to the Kannada version of the song. Shakthisree has also sung the Malayalam and Telugu versions of the number.
Adapted from the eponymous novel series written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, PS-I was a blockbuster. The magnum opus — featuring Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayam Ravi, Karthi and Trisha Krishnan in pivotal roles — has grossed over Rs 500 crore worldwide.
PS-II, the second and final installment in the Ponniyin Selvan series, is all set to hit the theatres on April 28.
