Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan: Part 2’s (PS-II) first-week collection amounted to Rs 128.65 crore nett at the domestic box office, taking its global earnings to Rs 258 crore gross, according to Box Office India reports.
The second week collection of the movie is going to be vital with the numbers determining whether the sequel would match up to Ponniyin Selvan-I’s (PS-I) lifetime worldwide collection of over Rs 500 crore.
After an opening-day collection of Rs 27 crore nett in India, the period drama added to its kitty an additional Rs 26 crore nett on Saturday, followed by another Rs 27 crore nett on Sunday.
PS-II passed the Monday litmus test by earning Rs 24 crore nett on Day 4. The collection, however, saw a dip on weekdays, with the film making Rs 10.5 crore nett, Rs 7.75 crore nett and Rs 6.50 crore nett on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
PS-II has been performing particularly well in Tamil Nadu, where the film’s collections are inching towards the Rs 100-crore nett mark. It has so far made Rs 84 crore nett in the state. The film also did well in the US market, where it grossed over USD 3.5 million in the first weekend.
Adapted from the eponymous novel series by Kalki Krishnamurthy, PS-II features Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Chiyaan Vikram, Trisha Krishnan, Jayam Ravi and Karthi in significant roles. Its soundtrack has been composed by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman.
