Ponniyin Selvan-II earns Rs 27 crore on opening day in India, falls short of PS-I’s Day 1 collection

The Mani Ratnam-directed period drama collected Rs 16 crore in Tamil Nadu alone

Ponniyin Selvan-II, the second instalment of Mani Ratnam’s two-part historical drama, raked in Rs 27 crore nett in India on its opening day, as per Box Office India reports.

The epic period saga, adapted from novels written by Kalki Krishnamurthy, collected Rs 16 crore nett in Tamil Nadu, Rs 2.75 crore nett in Kerala, Rs 3.25 crore nett in Karnataka, Rs 2.75 crore nett in Andhra Pradesh-Telangana region and Rs 2.50 crore in north India belt.

Featuring Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi and Trisha Krishnan in key roles, PS-II released in more than 3,200 screens worldwide. The movie earned Rs 11 crore from advance ticket sales. With strong word-of-mouth publicity for PS-II, trade analysts predict the film will continue to perform well at the box office.

Ponniyin Selvan-I, the first part of the franchise, was a blockbuster hit. It released on September 30, 2022 to a massive opening day collection of Rs 38 crore nett in India and went on to gross more than Rs 500 crore worldwide.
