Irrfan Khan’s last two films — Hindi Medium and Qarib Qarib Singlle — have both done well at the box office.
Now the actor is excited about his next Hollywood venture, Puzzle, set to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah’s Park City, Salt Lake City and Sundance Mountain Resort. “I am excited about the world premiere. This film is very close to my heart,” says Irrfan.
“When I read the script, I knew there is something really unusual and beautiful about the story and the characters. It’s a beautiful coming-of-age story of a woman — played by the amazingly talented Kelly Macdonald — that gave me a chance to explore a different aspect as an actor. It is the story of a woman named Agnes, taken for granted as a suburban mother, who discovers a passion for solving jigsaw puzzles which unexpectedly draws her into a new world where her life unfolds in ways she could never have imagined,” the actor says. “I am playing her new world.”
The Sundance Film Festival will be held from January 18-28.
Irrfan is satisfied with the kind of work he is getting now. “I wanted to break away from the studio films for a bit and do something more intimate. I am glad that I took this chance. I have some wonderful movies coming up,” he said.
A web series titled Ministry with the actor is in the planning stage. “I have completed Abhinay Deo’s film which is set for a February release. I am excited about Vishal Bhardwaj’s next that will be directed by Honey Trehan and looking forward to working with Deepika Padukone after Piku. I am also waiting to work with Shoojit Sircar and Anurag Basu again. I am doing Ronnie Screwvala’s next with Malayalam actor Dulquer Salmaan, Mithila Palkar and Amla. I met Amla for the first time and she’s doing some wonderful work,” he says.
The actor says he received a lot of flak for the bilingual Doob: No Bed Of Roses. The film had been banned in Bangladesh. But that has been lifted now. “The film is releasing in India, USA, Canada, Australia and Bangladesh now. It’s the story of love and loss. I play a character who gets married for the second time to a woman who is years younger to him and was once his daughter’s friend. The subject is about complicated relationships,” he said.
