1899 emerges as a captivating voyage through time and the human psyche, set against the backdrop of a migrant ship bound for America. Netflix’s multilingual German sci-fi gem skillfully blends suspense, mystery, and philosophical depth to create a spellbinding narrative. Drawing on Plato’s cave theory, the series plunges viewers into a world where perceptions of reality are constantly challenged, mirroring the characters’ journey from darkness to enlightenment. The cinematography of 1899 is nothing short of breathtaking, capturing the eerie beauty of the oceanic expanse and the cramped confines of the ship with equal mastery. Director Baran bo Odar creates a parallel universe with expertise and generates suspense in the mind of the viewer of this eight-episode series.

Each frame is meticulously crafted to evoke a sense of claustrophobia and awe, enhancing the experience for the audience. The ensemble cast delivers powerhouse performances, breathing life into a diverse array of characters grappling with their fears and desires. As secrets unravel and tensions escalate onboard, 1899 becomes a gripping exploration of human nature and the pursuit of truth in the face of uncertainty. Although the ending is quite unusual, I liked it. With its thought-provoking themes, stunning visuals, and riveting storytelling, 1899 has solidified its place as a must-watch for fans of sci-fi and psychological drama alike.

My favourite sci-fi series is Dark (2017-2020). Featuring an ensemble star cast, this grisly, intense science fiction thriller delves into the skin of an intricate nexus revolving around the sudden disappearance of children in the fictional town of Winden. Packed with mind-bending twists, unsettling revelations and impending threats, the series marvellously explores the existential implication of time and its impact on human nature and life. The degree of complexity capers with every episode, assessing the sharpness of the human brain and human observation skills. From employing the concept of time travel to portraying the annihilating outcome of an apocalypse, the finesse with which the director executes his vision is remarkable. Running successfully for three seasons, Dark impressed with its intriguing storytelling, praiseworthy performances, top-notch cinematography and a noteworthy musical score, emerging as one of the most popular sci-fi series of all time.

My favourite sci-fi series is Matt and Ross Duffer’s immensely popular American science-fiction horror show Stranger Things. I am also a huge fan of that intriguing and suspenseful show like innumerable other sci-fi die-hards across the globe. Watching each season of the series was an edge-of-the-seat experience for me. The entertaining, engaging and mysterious story of the show which is set in the 1980s — in which science fiction and horror are blended so perfectly — follows a group of teenagers living in a small town in Indiana whose lives changed all of a sudden when their friend vanished. The Netflix television series created by the Duffer brothers which has been receiving overwhelming love from viewers since it premiered in July 2016, is undoubtedly one the best shows of this genre released to date.
