It was Percy Jackson’s birthday yesterday and to celebrate the occasion, the Twitter account of the Percy Jackson web series shared a photo of the 600th floor of the Empire State Building lit up in blue – Percy’s favourite colour. According to the books, the 600th floor of the Empire State Building is where modern-day Mount Olympus is located.

Rick Riordan, the author of the book series, is also the producer of the Percy Jackson web series that is slated for a 2024 release on Disney+.

Blue cupcakes for Percy and gang

Walker Scobell, The Adam Project star who plays Percy in the Disney+ series, shared a BTS photo on Instagram from the sets where he and his gang were sharing blue cupcakes. If you look closely, you can spot the satyr Grover’s horns.

In the books, Percy is a 12-year-old who finds out that he is a demigod and the child of the Greek god Poseidon. Soon, he finds himself in the middle of adventures along with the protective satyr Grover (played by Aryan Simhadri), and fellow demigod Annabeth (played by Leah Sava Jeffries), who is the daughter of Athena.

While much is yet to be revealed, Disney+ shared the first official look of the Percy Jackson trio — Percy, Annabeth and Grover. The three were all smiles as they posed in front of what is presumably the forest, where they are going to film the ‘camp half-blood scenes’.

More detailed version in web series

After the movie series ended abruptly after two films and a lot of backlash, the reboot has come as a ray of hope for fans of the books. Rick Riordan announced that he is producing the web series himself.

According to Riordan’s blog posts, the series will be based on one book per season, leaving an option to include details that were previously left out in the film series. As filming is underway in Vancouver, Riordan wrote in his blog, “How much Percy content have we covered? Put it this way: If you were following along in the book, we have pretty much filmed through chapter nine in The Lightning Thief. That’s a big chunk of the story, but there is a massive amount of fun and games still to come!”

The other cast members

The series will also feature Virginia Kull as Percy’s mother Sally Jackson, Will and Grace star Megan Mullally as Mrs Dodds, Jason Mantzoukas as Olympian god Dionysus, Glynn Turman as the wise centaur Chiron, Timm Sharp as Percy’s stepdad Gabe Ugliano, Diary of a Future President actor Charlie Bushnell as Luke Castellan, Dior Goodjohn as Clarisse La Rue and Olivea Morton as Nancy Bobofit.

What’s next for Rick Riordan?

While filming continues for the Percy Jackson series, Riordan is simultaneously involved with an upcoming Netflix project on his three-book series, The Kane Chronicles, inspired by Egyptian mythology.
