Twelve-year-old demigod Percy Jackson’s world turns upside down when his father — a Greek God named Perseus — requests him to embark on a quest for Zeus’ missing master lightning bolt to avert a war of gods in the trailer of upcoming Disney+ series Percy Jackson and The Olympians.
Dropped on Thursday by the streamer, the two-minute-22-second-long video introduces Percy, played by Walker Scobell, as a school boy escaping bullies along with his best friend Grover (Aryan Simhadri) who later turns out to be a satyr. Soon, Percy starts seeing mythical creatures in real life which leads him to a camp meant to train demigods like him. At Camp Half-Blood, he meets Chiron, a centaur trainer who eventually becomes a mentor and father figure for Percy.
“The stories that I have told you, about Greek gods and half-bloods are all real,” says Percy’s mother to her son in the trailer, which gives glimpses of his training at Camp Half-blood. At the camp, Percy and Grover meet Annabeth Chase (Leah Jeffries), and the trio soon become best friends.
The highlight of the trailer is a scene where Percy saves his mother from a Minotaur with his Riptide — a prized sword made of Celestial Bronze, a material that is only effective on gods, demigods, Titans, Giants, and monsters — as Vance Joy’s 2013 song Riptide plays in the background.
The trailer promises a faithful adaptation of the Percy Jackson series of novels written by Rick Riordan. The first two episodes have been co-written by the author himself. The Disney+ show is run by Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz, with James Bobin directing the first two episodes.
Percy Jackson and The Olympians is slated to premiere on December 20 on Disney+.
