A gun-toting Shah Rukh Khan and a combat-trained spy Deepika Padukone are on a mission to avert a terror attack on India in the trailer of the upcoming Siddharth Anand-directed action thriller Pathaan, dropped by Yash Raj Films on Tuesday.

The two-minute-34-second trailer starts with John Abraham firing a missile at a car in Dubai. Dimple Kapadia’s voice echoes through as the scene shifts to a base where the actress reveals that terror group Outfit X, led by John’s character, is planning an attack on India.

The unprecedented terror attack calls for Pathaan, played by a chiselled Shah Rukh whose abs make you question whether the actor is actually 57.

The trailer reveals more layers of the three main characters. Shah Rukh plays a determined soldier Pathaan, who has been tasked with averting the attack planned by Outfit X. He meets a swoon-worthy spy, Deepika, and they join forces. John makes for a pretty good super villain against a long-haired Shah Rukh raring to go.

The dialogues written by Abbas Tyrewala shine through when said in Shah Rukh’s unique gravelly voice. Deepika is also seen undercover, in a blonde wig, and performing action stunts with a smile on her face. It is refreshing to see the female lead doing stunts and matching the two leading male actors step for step.

Vishal and Sheykhar’s background score adds to the edginess of the action-packed trailer. As impressive as the trailer is, it falls short in the VFX department.

Pathaan is a part of Yash Raj Films’ spy universe, along with the Hrithik Roshan-Tiger Shroff-starrer War. Produced by Aditya Chopra, Pathaan marks Shah Rukh’s comeback after a four-year hiatus. The film releases in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu in theatres on January 25.
