Suman Ghosh’s latest documentary, Parama: A Journey with Aparna Sen, is set to be screened at the 30th Kolkata International Film Festival, the filmmaker announced recently.

The documentary had its world premiere at the prestigious International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2024, following which it was screened at Houston, New York, Vienna, Stuttgart and the BFI London Indian Film Festival.

“Our film will be screened at the Kolkata International Film Festival. Delighted to show it to my home city at last,” the National Award-winning filmmaker wrote on Facebook.

Parama will be screened at Sisir Mancha (1.30pm) on December 5 and at Nandan 3 (5pm) on December 8.

Ghosh had directed Sen in his 2019 film Basu Paribar, which also featured late actor Soumitra Chatterjee.

“In my 15 years of cinematic journey, I have never been able to crack Rotterdam. I have been to many other top film festivals - but always thought Rotterdam is a tough nut to crack. The main satisfaction of entering such a top film festival is that I might have been able to make something which might be universal. That is how I see my subject,” Ghosh had said ahead of Parama’s world premiere at Rotterdam.

Aparna Sen, an acclaimed filmmaker honoured with nine National Awards, directed her third Hindi film, The Rapist, in 2021. This intense social drama, showcasing powerful performances by Konkona Sensharma and Arjun Rampal, earned the esteemed Kim Jiseok Award at the 26th Busan International Film Festival.

Suman Ghosh’s latest feature directorial Puratawn, marking the return of Sharmila Tagore in Bengali cinema after a 14-year hiatus, premiered at the MAMI Mumbai International Film Festival in October.
