Emily Blunt’s jobless single mom and Chris Evans’ medical representative find themselves at the centre of a failing pharmaceutical company’s ponzi scheme in the teaser of American crime drama film Pain Hustlers.

Dropped by Netflix on Wednesday late evening, the one-minute-long teaser introduces us to Blunt’s character, a single mom who has just lost her job and is at the end of her rope. A chance encounter with a pharmaceutical sales executive, played by Evans, brings easy money but gets her entangled in a dangerous racketeering conspiracy of a failing American pharma company.

The clip shows glimpses of Blunt and Evans’ expensive, hard-partying lifestyle with title cards warning — “Pain Hustlers may cause increased energy, elevated mood, ecstasy, paranoia, aggression and greed”. It also shows Andy Garia as an accomplice in the scheme and it seems he’s the boss of the company.

The plot looks similar to Netflix’s recent limited drama series Painkiller, directed by Peter Berg. The six-episode series is based on New Yorker articles ‘The Family That Built an Empire of Pain’ by Patrick Radden Keefe and ‘Pain Killer: An Empire of Deceit and the Origin of America's Opioid Epidemic’ by Barry Meier.

It chronicles the rise of the opioid crisis in America, with an emphasis on Richard Sackler-owned Purdue Pharma, a company that manufactured OxyContin, a dangerously strong, semi-synthetic opioid used medically for the treatment of moderate to severe pain.

“To get high, you have to go low. Emily Blunt and Chris Evans star in a desperate story of American excess. Pain Hustlers premieres October 27,” the official X (previously Twitter) handle of Netflix wrote, sharing the teaser.

Helmed by Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts director David Yates, the film also stars Catherine O'Hara, Jay Duplass, Brian d'Arcy James and Chloe Coleman. Written by Wells Tower, it is based on the 2022 book of the same name by Evan Hughes.

PainHustlers will be streaming on Netflix from October 27.
