“Women ruled the society in the past. The world used to be run wisely. But a devastating flood changed it all. There was no milk left in the breasts of the mother goddess to feed the world. A unique power took over the world at that time — Pahadpangira,” the statement said.

“Who was he? What did he look like? No one knows. Patriarchy began with the advent of Pahadpangira. But till date no man has seen Pahadpangira with his own eyes,” the statement further said.

In September, Barve had announced his decision to step away from the sequel of Tumbbad, just days after the film’s successful re-release in theatres, which concluded with a teaser hinting at a follow-up to the cult classic.

Barve had described Tumbbad as exploring “the greed of patriarchy” and hinted that his future projects would delve into even darker themes. He also revealed his plans to begin production on Pahadpangira in March 2025.

The original Tumbbad, produced by Sohum Shah Films and presented by Aanand L Rai's Colour Yellow Productions, captivated audiences with its exploration of greed, mythology, and horror. The film’s rich storytelling and atmospheric visuals garnered a loyal following over the years.

The recent re-release has not only reignited interest in Tumbbad but also crossed the film’s initial box office earnings from its 2018 debut. The re-released version earned Rs 30.5 crore nett, while the original release collected Rs 13.5 crore nett.

In addition to Pahadpangira, Barve is currently collaborating with the renowned duo Raj & DK on two web series — Gulkanda Tales and Rakt Bramhand.
