It would be very easy to dismiss Bobby, played by Kangana Ranaut in the Prakash Kovelamudi film, as unhinged but the character was so much more. Kangana brought a deliciously dark tinge to the character — a 20-something starlet aspiring to become a Bolly heroine who suffers from acute psychosis and dissociative identity disorder. “Uske dimaag mein satrah-atharah log rehte hai,” is how Bobby was described, but it’s to Kangana’s credit that she owned the character — quirks and warts — making us root for Bobby even when she wasn’t particularly likable. And her predilection to smash imaginary cockroaches to pulp was so much fun!

Jimmy and Karate Mani in ‘Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota’ Source: The movie

Every minute of Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota was paisa-vasool fun, with Gulshan Devaiah turning in a rip-roaring twin act — as brothers Karate Mani and Jimmy, one a Kumite champion and the other a psychotic villain. As different as chalk and cheese, the two were distinguished by the fact that one was a Kamal Haasan fan and the other a Rajinikanth follower. Jimmy was a blast, with Gulshan channeling Mike Myers and playing him with a mix of manic energy and wicked one-liners.

Dangal to Stree, Aparshakti Khurana has played some memorable side characters, and he practically walked away with all the accolades in Pati Patni Aur Woh. His Fahim Rizvi may have been the quintessential childhood dost of the hero, but the best lines — remember the paan joke? — and standout moments belonged to him. This one was about quirk done right, armed with deadpan humour.

Moeen in ‘Gully Boy’ Source: The movie

Ranveer Singh — who brought Murad to life — has recently confessed that he wanted to play the role of Moeen instead. That’s how cool this Gully Boy character is. A mechanic by day and a carjacker by night, there was something about Moeen — played with ultimate coolth by Vijay Varma — that was instantly alluring, from the way he puffed on a cigarette to that ’70s-styled swagger in the opening moments of the Zoya Akhtar film. The Murad-Moeen friendship was a #win, with that scene between the two when Moeen lands up in jail being a standout.

Acid in ‘Chhichhore’ Source: The movie

Chhichhore was a mix of many a memorable character. Sexa, played by Varun Sharma, was #TooMuchFun. But we pick Acid — Mr Crazy Cool of H4 — who earned the moniker because of his penchant for mouthing abuses aka ‘verbal acid’. Played by Telugu actor Naveen Polishetty in his Bolly debut, Acid’s strength lay in the fact that he was relatable (who hasn’t been frustrated going through engineering college?!). Some of the film’s best moments, especially the one that had him penning those acid-dripping troll chants, belonged to Acid.

This could have ended up as just another character functioning as the hero’s sidekick, but Calcutta boy Soham Majumdar brought both emotion and empathy to the role of Shiva. Standing by Kabir Singh (played by Shahid Kapoor) in his whirlwind ride through a life of drink and drug — remember that scene where he jolts a sozzled Kabir awake by making him snort cocaine? — Shiva embodied what a friend should be, his positivity helping us ignore the pitfalls (well, almost!) of Kabir Singh.
