Jennifer Lopez, who recently married her ex Ben Affleck, marries Owen Wilson in her latest film, Marry Me, which is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The only similarity between her real life and her reel life in Marry Me? JLo is herself in both – a superstar singer.

Based on the 2012 graphic novel Marry Me by Bobby Crosby, the film follows the relationship between pop star Kat Valdez (Jennifer Lopez) and maths teacher Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson). The two get hitched on stage after Valdez decides to marry the concert attendee instead of her disloyal fiancé Bastian (Maluma).

Lopez, who has taken her new husband’s surname and writes Jennifer Affleck, is in her element in Marry Me as a Latin pop star who can set the stage ablaze. While this role might feel like second skin to her, Lopez has left her mark as a powerhouse actress in many other films. Lopez plays Maya DaVilla, who’s spent 15 years working at a store only to be passed up for a much-deserved promotion. When a male colleague with an MBA degree is promoted instead of her, Maya decides to get a fake college degree and jumpstart her career in another company. This is an age-appropriate role where Lopez stuns with her looks apart from her performance.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting (2012)

In a movie with an ensemble cast, standing out is a difficult task but we have seen Lopez do that with great ease. Based on a pregnancy guidebook of the same name by Heidi Murkoff, What to Expect When You’re Expecting follows the different parenthood journeys of five couples. Lopez plays Holly Castillo, who along with her husband Alex Castillo (Rodrigo Santoro), hopes to adopt a child from Ethiopia. She perfectly portrays the anxieties that many women struggle with before motherhood as well as the happiness that comes with it.

Shall We Dance? (2004)

Shall We Dance? is not quite what one would expect from a Richard Gere-Jennifer Lopez-starrer. Lopez brings her dancing talent to the fore as former competitive dancer Paulina, but she is not the good-looking Gere’s lady love in this movie (it is Susan Sarandon). As Gere’s John Clark falls in love with dancing, the talented Paulina falls back in love with dancing and decides to return to competitive dancing. Shall We Dance? is about finding and following one’s passion, and Lopez shows off her twinkle toes with a scorching dance performance with Gere.

Maid in Manhattan (2002)

Maid in Manhattan has to be a part of the romcom list starring JLo. This film shows that while Lopez can own the stage like a queen, she can also bring her glamour down several notches and blend into the role of an unassuming housekeeper. Though a romcom with a fairytale ending, Maid in Manhattan is a poignant commentary on the class divide and Lopez hits the right notes as a single mother who wants to make something out of her life. And with the sparks flying between Ralph Fiennes’ Chris Marshall and JLo’s Marisa Ventura, the film is worth going back to several times.

Enough (2002)

This 2002 thriller marks another standout performance by Lopez. Based on the 1998 novel Black and Blue by Anna Quindlen, Enough has Lopez as Slim Hiller, a victim of domestic violence who hits back with all her might after much physical abuse from her husband. You can feel the vulnerability, pain and fear Slim experiences when she tries to escape her husband who’s bent on hunting her down. Lopez shows how nimble she’s in action scenes too.
