Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert won the Oscar for best director for their film Everything Everywhere All At Once at the 95th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 13.

Taking to the stage amid a standing ovation, Daniel Scheinert paid tribute to his fellow nominees and thanked his cast and crew for their efforts. “We want to dedicate this to all the mommies of the world to our moms, specifically to my mom and dad. Thank you for squashing my dreams when I was making very disturbing horror movies or really perverted comedy films or dressing in drag as a kid, which is a threat to nobody,” he said.

“A director is nobody without their incredible cast and crew, it is my family, my friends. If our film has greatness and genius it is because they have greatness and genius flowing through their hearts and souls and minds and they gave that precious gift to our film,” said Daniel Kwan.

The Daniels won the trophy for Everything Everywhere All At Once, which stars Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, Jenny Slate, Harry Shum Jr., James Hong, and Jamie Lee Curtis. It chronicles the life of a Chinese-American immigrant, Evelyn Wang (Yeoh), who, while being audited by the IRS, discovers that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse.

The Daniels were nominated alongside Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin), Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans), Todd Field (Tár) and Ruben Östlund (Triangle of Sadness).
