Oppenheimer trumps Greta Gerwig’s Barbie on Day 1 in India, becomes Christopher Nolan’s highest-ever opener

While Nolan’s biographical thriller earned Rs 13.5 crore nett, Gerwig’s fantasy comedy minted Rs 5 crore nett in India

Christopher Nolan's biographical thriller Oppenheimer outperformed Greta Gerwig’s fantasy comedy Barbie by a significant margin in India on the opening day, emerging as the highest-grossing Hollywood film in India this year and the filmmaker’s most successful opener in the country till date.

Oppenheimer — starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role alongside Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, and Florence Pugh — collected a whopping Rs 13.5 crore nett on Day 1 in Indian theatres against Barbie’s opening day collection of Rs 5 crore, according to trade reports.

Barbie starring Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, Emma Mackie and Will Ferrell — explores the unique connection between the toy world of Barbie and her adventures alongside Ken in the real world. Oppenheimer, on the other hand, explores the life of the American scientist Julius Robert Oppenheimer, remembered as the father of the atomic bomb.

The tables, however, turned in favour of Barbie in the international market, with the film amassing an impressive USD 22.3 million, and becoming the highest preview-show earner of the year, according to US-based portal Deadline. In comparison, Oppenheimer earned USD 10.5 million during its preview shows, Deadline mentioned in its report.

Oppenheimer crossed the Day 1 collections of Vin Diesel’s Fast X to claim the top spot in terms of opening day collection in India.

Meanwhile, Tom Cruise-starrer Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1 stayed afloat on its second Friday in India, collecting approximately Rs 2.40 crore nett on Day 10. This takes the total earnings of the Christopher McQuarrie-helmed actioner to Rs 83.9 crore nett so far.
