Apart from Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, a couple of Bengali films — a drama and a thriller — will also arrive in cinemas today. Here’s a ready reckoner of all the movies you can watch in theatres this weekend.

Oppenheimer (English)

Based on the book American Prometheus by Kair Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, the film delves into Oppenheimer's journey, showcasing his remarkable intelligence, overconfidence and unwavering determination that forever transformed the nature of warfare. Tragically, this momentous achievement led to the loss of countless lives and unleashed widespread fear, while Oppenheimer himself grappled with overwhelming guilt throughout his life.

The film revolves around the beloved Mattel doll that holds a cherished spot in every child's heart. Starring Margot Robbie as Stereotypical Barbie, this comedy takes viewers on a unique adventure. The titular character goes through an intense existential struggle and ventures into the real world with Ken (Ryan Gosling), quickly learning the highs and lows of coexisting with humans.

Niharika: In The Mist (Bengali)

Cast: Anuradha Mukherjee, Anindya Sengupta, Silajit Majumder and Mallika Mazumder

Adapted from Sanjib Chattopadhyay’s short story Bhoy, Niharika: In The Mist revolves around a young girl, Deepa (Anuradha Mukherjee), who moves in with her maternal uncle Akash (Shilajit Majumdar) and his wife (Mallika Mazumdar) following her mother's unexpected passing. Seeking solace from the tumultuous world of greed, immoral connections and unwelcome advances she experienced during her teenage years, Deepa chooses her new residence to empower herself.

Surongo (Bengali)

Directed by: Raihan Rafi

Cast: Afran Nisho, Toma Mirza, Mostafa Monwar, Nusraat Faria Mazhar and Shahiduzzaman Selim

After tasting success in Bangladesh, Raihan Rafi’s thriller Surongo comes to India this week. The film revolves around Masud (Afran Nisho), an electrician who falls in love with Moyna (Toma Mirza) and marries her. When Masud goes to work in Malaysia, Moyna develops an affair with his friend Jahir (Mostafa Monwar). Upon returning to Bangladesh, Masud finds his home repossessed due to debts from his wedding. Desperate for money, he steals money from a bank and confesses to Moyna on a video call. Moyna betrays him to the police, leading to his imprisonment. The rest of the plot follows how Masud escapes from prison and takes his revenge on Moyna.
