Monkey D. Luffy and his ragtag crew of The Straw Hat Pirates cruise a treacherous stretch of ocean in pursuit of a mythical treasure in the trailer for Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the famous Japanese manga One Piece.
Unveiled by Netflix on Saturday, the three-minute-seven-second-long trailer follows a boy named Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) who can stretch his body like rubber. He aspires to become a fearsome pirate and forms with friends a crew named The Straw Hat Pirates to go on a voyage in search of a mythical treasure known as One Piece, which would make him the Pirate King.
In the clip, which resembles Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean film series that followed Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Deep) and his crew, Luffy promises that they will find the mythical treasure in the Grand Line — “a treacherous stretch of ocean with bigger islands and bigger pirates”. Apart from introducing several other characters such as Buggy the Clown and Arlong, the clip also recreates moments from the anime, such as Luffy entrusting his hat to Nami and Zoro duelling with Captain Mihawk.
Filled with action-packed sequences, humorous exchanges and pirate shenanigans, the trailer promises a loyal adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s beloved manga that has already been adapted into a long-running anime series.
Sharing the trailer on Twitter, Netflix wrote, “Welcome to the Great Pirate Era. The legendary quest to discover the ONE PIECE sets sail August 31.” It seems that the first season would deliver a loyal adaptation of the East Blue Saga, focusing on the formation of the Straw Hat Pirates as they get ready to sail to the Grand Line in search of the One Piece.
The manga creator, Eiichiro Oda, has taken to Twitter to praise the live-action adaptation’s trailer.
Apart from Iñaki Godoy’s Luffy, the series will also feature Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero as Usopp and Taz Skylar as Sanji among others.
One Piece will be streaming on Netflix from August 31.
