Contrary to fans’ expectations, Season 2 of One Piece live-action will not include the Alabasta arc and will instead focus on the events leading up to the Drum Island arc, manga writer Eiichiro Oda revealed in a note shared by Netflix on Tuesday.
“Yes, the live-action One Piece is currently in production, with filming well underway. The story will cover Loguetown, Reverse Mountain (Twin Cape), Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island,” reads the note shared on Instagram.
In Oda’s manga, the Straw Hat pirates prepare to enter the Grand Line in the Loguetown arc. They face the mysteries of Reverse Mountain and its dangerous terrain in the next arc. At Whiskey Peak, they deal with deceptive bounty hunters working for Baroque Works. While the pirates confront giants on Little Garden, they seek medical help for a crew member in the Drum Island arc.
“The Grand Line is an even more expansive world. You may wonder, what was the inspiration behind that kingdom? How does it connect to the real world? Naturally, the distinctive cast members have been assembled from around the world, and I can't help but get excited thinking about how the adventure has already begun! Among those yet to be announced, what about Vivi? And Miss All Sunday? What are they doing with Chopper?” he wrote in his message.
Previously, Netflix had announced that Callum Kerr, Julia Rehwald, Rob Collett and Ty Keoghi have been roped in for the roles of Smoker, Tashigi, Wapol and Dalton respectively. They also announced that David Dastmalchian has been cast as the Baroque Works agent Mr 3, alongwith Daniel Lasker as Mr 9, Camrus Johnson as Mr 5 and Jazzara Jaslyn as Miss Valentine.
Oda said that more cast members for the second season will be announced on August 21, 22 and 23. While he did not specify the names of the characters, it is expected that the cast for Tony Tony Chopper, Miss All Sunday and Vivi Nefertari will be revealed.
Set in the world of pirates, One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy who sets sail with his wacky crew on a perilous journey across the Grand Line to find the legendary treasure One Piece and become the Pirate King. In his quest to achieve freedom in its truest sense, Luffy overcomes formidable enemies, forges meaningful friendships and unravels the world’s secrets.
The anime adaptation of the manga series, which began in 1997, is currently ongoing with over 1,000 episodes. Starring Iñaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero and Taz Skylar, One Piece live-action series topped Netflix’s top 10 global list for weeks after its debut on August 31 last year.
