Filmmaker Marielle Heller’s upcoming film Nightbitch starring Amy Adams is set to hit theatres on December 6, production house Searchlight Pictures announced on Friday.
“Six-time Academy Award nominee Amy Adams stars in Nightbitch, written and directed by Marielle Heller, novel by Rachel Yoder. In theatres December 6th,” Searchlight Pictures wrote on Instagram.
Nightbitch is an adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s 2001 satirical novel centred on a woman who takes a break from her art career to be a stay-at-home mum. But her new domestic life takes a horrifying turn when she realises that she is slowly turning into a carnivorous animal after having to deal with full-time responsibilities as a mother. Lonely and overwhelmed, she imagines that she is growing sharp canines like that of a dog and discovers an aggressive voice within herself. Her new feral instincts arise out of her exhausting motherhood routine, especially at night when her two-year-old child would not go to sleep.
The film is helmed by actress-turned-filmmaker Marielle Heller, known for her 2015 film The Diary of a Teenage Girl and the 2018 crime-comedy Can You Ever Forgive Me starring Melissa McCarthy. Heller received an Independent Spirit Award for best first feature in 2016 as well as The Gotham Independent Film Award for Best Actress in 2015 for The Diary of a Teenage Girl.
Nightbitch is produced by Anne Carey, who had previously backed Heller’s The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Sue Naegle, Christina Oh and Stacy O’Neil are also producing the film alongside Carey.
Heller last helmed the 2019 psychological drama A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, starring Tom Hanks which earned him an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category.
Adams last appeared in Disney’s 2022 musical Disenchanted. The six-time Oscar-winning actress also has Taika Waititi’s film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel Klara and the Sun in the pipeline. She will star opposite Jenna Ortega in the film.
