A darker secret looms within a picture-perfect family in a fresh teaser of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s upcoming Netflix crime series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, slated to premiere on September 19.
Dropped by the streamer on Tuesday, the teaser opens with Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny posing for a family portrait alongside their two sons, Lyle and Erik, portrayed by Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch, respectively. As they smile for the camera, Sevigny’s voiceover declares that she’s had enough of the lies. The mood shifts when Bardem’s voiceover ominously states, “It’s all a stunt. I’m going to fix this family,” just before the photo session ends, leaving their sons alone in the unsettling silence.
The teaser culminates in a tense, shadowy scene where Chavez and Koch’s characters embrace in the darkness. Suddenly, a gunshot rings out, breaking the silence, and one of them whispers, “It’s all over now. We’re on our own.”
“When picture perfect isn’t. MONSTERS: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. September 19. Only on Netflix,” the streamer captioned the video shared on YouTube.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is based on the real-life story of Lyle and Erik Menendez who brutally murdered their parents, José and Mary Louise ‘Kitty’ Menendez, shooting them a total of 16 times, in 1989. Initially, the brothers deceived police with an alibi, claiming they were at a movie and festival. However, the extravagant spending of their inherited fortune raised suspicions.
The show is created by Murphy and Brennan following the success of their 2022 Netflix documentary Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Backed by Murphy and Brennan as executive producers alongside Javier Bardem, the Netflix series will be directed by Brennan, Carl Franklin, Max Winkler, Paris Barclay and Michael Uppendahl.
