New on Netflix: 5 promising trailers of upcoming shows and films

From food documentaries to stand-up special, here are the shows and films you can look forward to watching on Netflix

Netflix has dropped a new set of trailers for upcoming shows, films and documentaries to premiere between November 2022 and January 2023. The streaming service is also coming up with stand-up specials and food documentaries. We take a look at some of the most promising trailers from the lot.

In Her Hands

Upcoming documentary In Her Hands follows the story of Afghanistan’s first female mayor Zarifa Ghafari, who took charge at the young age of 26. Directed by filmmakers Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen, who previously helmed Watani: My Homeland and The War of Afghan Women, the documentary is shot during the turbulent times when US troops were fleeing Afghanistan after the Taliban invasion.

The two-minute-36-second-long trailer chronicles Zarifa Ghafari’s fight for survival against the backdrop of the Taliban uprising in her country. As Western forces announce their retreat and the Taliban rise back to power, Zarifa and women across the country struggle to come to terms with the new diktats. Amid these changes, Zarifa fights for the women of her homeland and the generations to come. She is an advocate of women’s education and is fighting for her beliefs.

In Her Hands will arrive on Netflix on November 16.

Lockwood & Co.

British supernatural detective thriller Lockwood & Co. it is based on the popular book series of the same name by Jonathan Stroud. Directed by Joe Cornish, it stars Ruby Stokes, Morven Christie, Luke Treadaway, Paddy Holland and Ivano Jeremiah.

The one-minute-30-second-long teaser shows us a scene from the series where a ghost is trying to attack one of the ghost hunters while another member of the titular ghost-hunting agency tries to save her. The promo has strong Ghostbusters vibes.

Lockwood & Co. will be streaming from January 27.

Snack VS. Chef

Snack VS. Chef is a unique food competition show where 12 chefs will compete against each other to first create iconic snacks and then recreate a new dish with the help of that snack. The show is hosted by comedians Megan Stalter and Hari Kondabolu.

“This new food competition sees 12 chefs go head-to-head in the ultimate snack showdown. Not only must they recreate some of the world's most iconic snacks, they'll also be challenged to invent their own original snacks inspired by beloved classics. Only one will prevail and claim the $50,000 prize,” reads the synopsis.

Snack VS. Chef will be streaming from November 30.

Taco Chronicles: Cross the border

Food documentary Taco Chronicles: Cross the border explores the origins of Taco, Mexico’s biggest gastronomical export. The documentary also examines how the traditional dish crossed the borders and found its place in American culture via the city of Chicago.

In the short one-minute-20-second-trailer, the narrator says that the taco leaves Mexico, but Mexico doesn't leave the taco. Across the US border, Mexican cooks keep the tradition alive and experiment with new flavours in Chicago. It features a glimpse of interviews with the people who are creating these wonderful dishes.

Taco Chronicles: Cross the border will be streaming from November 23.

Neal Brennan: Blocks

American comedian Neal Brennan’s stand-up special Neal Brennan: Blocks will arrive on the streaming platform on November 8.

Directed by Derek Delguadio, the show was filmed at The Belasco in Los Angeles.

In the one-minute-47-second trailer, Neal Brennan moves physical blocks around the stage in order to explain the emotional and cultural issues that make him feel like something’s wrong with him. From his complicated relationship with his dog Keith to his slim chances of finding real everlasting love, he gives the audience an honest and hilarious look inside his psyche.

Neal Brennan: Blocks will arrive on November 8.
