Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has joined the cast of Freaky Friday 2, a sequel to Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan’s 2003 comedy, the actress announced on Monday alongside a screenshot of a news report.

“Quite the freaky announcement on a Monday if I do say so myself,” the 22-year-old actress wrote on Instagram.

According to the report, Sophia Hammons is also one of the newest additions to the cast alongside Maitreyi. Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky and Rosalind Chao are set to reprise their roles in the film.

Earlier in the day, Disney announced on Instagram that the film has gone into production and is slated to release in 2025. “The Colemans are back and coming to theaters in 2025! The sequel to Freaky Friday is now in production,” they wrote alongside a goofy picture of Curtis with Lohan on the sets of the film.

Canadian filmmaker Nisha Ganatra has been roped in to direct the Freaky Friday sequel. She is known for helming the 2020 film The High Note starring Dakota Johnson and Tracee Ellis Ross. Recently, Ganatra has directed several episodes of Hulu’s Welcome to Chippendale’s.

Freaky Friday follows the story of a mother and her teenage daughter whose bodies get swapped after receiving cryptic fortunes at a Chinese restaurant. As they navigate each other’s lives, they gain newfound understanding and empathy. Being polar opposites of each other, the duo learn valuable lessons along the way while finding a way to reverse the switch.

Disney released Freaky Friday in 2003, which amassed USD 160 million at the global box office. Andrew Gunn, who had backed the previous film, is reportedly producing the sequel along with former Disney executive Kristin Burr.

Lindsay was recently seen in Netflix’s romantic comedy Irish Wish and appeared in a cameo role in the Mean Girls musical film released this year. She has Netflix’s Our Little Secret in the pipeline, which also stars Kristin Chenoweth and Ian Harding.

Curtis, who won an Oscar for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once in the best supporting actress category last year, is set to feature in the movie adaptation of the popular video game Borderlands alongside Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart.
