After all the things that Devi Vishwakumar says ‘Never Have I Ever’ to, we have a season finale where the Indian-American teenager growing up in San Fernando Valley in LA shows the first signs of adulting and takes responsibility for her actions.
Show creators Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher’s Netflix series
Never Have I Ever wraps up with Devi — played by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan — making her way through boy troubles, heartbreak, friendships and finding her place in the world, with four generations of Ramakrishnan women coming together to break some age-old social conventions. Here are the highlights from Season 4 of Never Have I Ever.
Devi gets her well deserved character arc
The character arc of Devi comes full circle at the end of four seasons. In Season 1, we were introduced to the Indian-American teenager who was numbed by the sudden death of her father. The loss combined with the challenges of adolescence made Devi a very relatable angry teenager who struggled to keep her emotions in check.
Like the last three seasons, the first few episodes of Season 4 have Devi doing what she does best – having a public outburst leading to broken relationships. After losing her virginity to Ben (Jaren Lewison), she lashes out at Margot, Ben’s girlfriend and her frenemy. And she almost gets Margot suspended from school, suspecting that Margot may have spray-painted her new car.
But the reckless behaviour ends with that. Thanks to the intensive therapy she has been on all this while, Devi finally starts to see where she’s going wrong. She doesn’t get angry at her mother Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan) for wanting to fall in love again, apologises to Margot and becomes friends with her, and stops tying her self-worth to the number of boys who give her attention.
An underrated love story blooms
The character of Nirmala Vishwakumar — Devi’s paternal grandmother, played by Ranjita Chakravarty — had steadily found a loyal fan base through the previous seasons for her tongue-in-cheek observations and modern outlook on life.
In the final season, Nirmala gets a full track to herself with a second shot at love and marriage. It is heartwarming to see an older Indian woman casting aside conservative ideas and consider starting conjugal life again. Nirmala is initially apprehensive of how people will react to her wanting to settle down with Len (Jeff Garlin), an older Jewish man, and even wants to break up with him, but goes ahead after the other Ramakrishnan women welcome her decision with open arms.
The marriage ceremony, a mix of Hindu and Jewish rituals, is attended by Devi’s friends as well who are excited by the grandeur of the Indian wedding.
Team Ben wins, but not without a hitch in the road
The debate around which boy is best for Devi is put to rest after Ben Gross finally confesses his feelings after keeping us waiting for four whole years.
The confession doesn’t come easy though. In the final season, Devi and Ben lose their virginity to each other but have an awkward moment afterward, ending up with Devi storming out of his house. Devi comparing her sex life to that shown in the TV show Euphoria and not knowing what to do next shows how confusing the teenage years can be.
The situation goes from bad to worse when Ben shows no interest in dating Devi and starts seeing Margot instead. This leads Devi to hook up with Ethan (Michael Cimino) though not for long. Meanwhile, Ben breaks up with Margot but even then neither Ben nor Devi addresses their feelings for each other.
In keeping with the trajectory of Devi’s inner transformation, she does her best to get Ben and Margot back together after realising they had been texting each other all along.
A kiss with Paxton (Darren Barnet) did get Team Paxton’s hopes up but Devi admits that it was her final step to move on from him. And then the moment comes that we all had been waiting for the past three seasons. At Nalini’s wedding, Ben comes clean to Devi about his feelings for her.
Fabiola and Elanor are true friends to Devi
It’s been obvious since the first season that being friends with Devi comes with a lot of difficulties, given her anger issues and random outbursts. However, Elanor (Ramona Young) and Fabiola (Lee Rodriguez) prove to be Devi’s true friends, the ones that stick with her through thick and thin.
After Elanor breaks up with Trent (Benjamin Norris), she feels drawn to Ethan. A complication arises when Devi finds out that Ethan likes Devi and despite her best efforts, she kisses him. Elanor deals with her feelings towards Trent and also with Devi dating Ethan.
Fabiola, on the other hand, applies to Devi’s dream college, Princeton, and gets through even as Devi is on the waitlist. The final episode shows Devi getting through Princeton too, and the two girls make plans to be roommates.
